Penny Bernstein, an associate professor at , succumbed to cancer Sunday.

The Canal Fulton resident was instrumental in organizing a county-wide project that brought together several environmental organizations, colleges and universities and .

Dr. Bernstein was a true teacher. She informed, inspired, empowered, listened and cared. She took the time to know, cherish, and engage her students. She left them with more. More than just knowing a lot more about biology, but also with a new-found sense that they impacted the universe and could make a difference. I am a better teacher because she was my teacher. The "better" that she brought to the world will last and last.
