Kent State Stark Campus Professor Receives Prestigious Award

Of the 18 nominees for the Outstanding Research and Scholar Award, Professor Carrie Schweitzer was selected based on the quality of her research and scholarship and its impact on society.

Professor Carrie Schweitzer, Ph.D., a Kent State University at Stark faculty member in the Department of Geology, was one of three Kent State professors recognized during a ceremony as the university honored its Outstanding Research and Scholar Award recipients.

Schweitzer was the only recipient from the Stark County campus. Michael Loderstedt and Katherine Rawson, both from the Kent campus were also given the award. 

The award honors these teachers for their notable scholarly contributions that have brought acknowledgement to their fields of study and to Kent State. Of the 18 nominees for the award, these recipients were selected based on the quality of their research and scholarship and its impact on society.

“Her incredible research productivity is a testimony to her careful field work all over the world, her keen mind and her diligent, non-stop work ethic," Dr. Daniel Holm, professor and chair of the Department of Geology, said about Schweitzer in a prepared statement.  

She has been part of Stark's department of geology since 2000. Schweitzer has published more than 120 technical books and papers and her recent research in paleontology focuses on systematics and biogeography.

“I am honored and humbled by the recognition. It has been made possible by the support of my family and my colleagues at both the Stark and Kent campuses who have worked with me to make my dual professional interests in teaching and research possible,” she said.

“Kent State University at Stark is very proud of the research conducted by Dr. Schweitzer, particularly because a scholar of her caliber is also a dedicated teacher who shares our commitment to student learning," said Kent State Stark’s Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Ruth Capasso in a prepared statement. "In addition to making discoveries which advance her discipline, she regularly instructs undergraduate students at all levels, providing a true model of scientific inquiry and service."
