Hoover High Takes First Place at Diebold 'Paint Off' (With Photos)

A team of five Hoover High students competed against four other groups and took home the first-place prize Thursday

Editor's note: The following information was provided to us by Hoover High art teacher Christopher Triner.

Congratulations to artists who participated May 10 at the first Diebold "Paint Off." A team of five Hoover students competed against four other groups from local high schools to complete a 4x4 mural that depicts the student's concept of the assigned theme of innovation. With a time limit of two hours and 15 minutes to plan, lay out and paint their concept, our students moved quickly to blend the imagery of the mechanical past with today's digital age.

Awards were given for "employee favorite" and "judges choice" (first place). Our students won first place! Each student received a great gift basket, fleece blankets and T-shirts. Hoover High School was awarded a $100 Pat Catan Gift Card and a plaque to be displayed at the school.

As the CEO, president, and other executives judged the competition, students had to explain their vision to the executives, and how innovation in art and technology are important qualities for 21st century learners. Credit goes to senior Alexander Smith and his state-recognized speech and debate skills on display when talking to the executives (Thanks speech coaches Missy Stertzbach and Jennifer Manion ... job well done!).

All of the works will be on display at Diebold's World Headquarters on Mt. Pleasant Avenue. Hoover's work will be in the main entrance to the executive offices until September when it will be given back to our school for permanent display.

This even was co-sponsored by Diebold and Arts in Stark.  Thanks to both organizations for giving our students this wonderful opportunity.

Michael O'Connor, art competition and tennis sectionals winner?! This is quite the week for Mr. O'Connor. Congrats! And great job to the rest of the Hoover High School artists! It looks fantastic and you were all deserving of the opportunity, and most importantly, the award! :)
