Hoover High Cheerleaders Helping Hurricane Victims

'2-Day Raise' designed to collect funds for displaced high schoolers in Lido Beach, NY.

Hoover High School’s 27 freshmen, junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders are teaming up this week to raise money for Hurricane Sandy victims who attend Long Beach High School in Lido Beach, NY.

The cheerleaders will be collecting monetary donations for storm victims during a “2-Day Raise” at school Thursday and Friday and during the Hoover varsity basketball home opener against Lincoln West on Friday night.

Hoover English teacher Tiffany Walker, who also serves as varsity cheerleading adviser, said the fundraiser was proposed as a challenge by her friend Deanna Mazur, cheerleading adviser at Jackson High School.

“They’re our rival school, so we're hoping to raise more money than Jackson. But, in reality, it’s a friendly rivalry and we’re all trying to raise as much for (Long Beach High students) as we can,” Walker said.

Long Beach Public Schools resumed classes Nov. 13, two weeks after Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on the barrier island, according to Long Beach Patch. However, many district families were displaced by the storm, meaning students are temporarily living in nearby communities.

Hoover cheerleaders will be collecting donations in their third-period classes Thursday during the eight minutes that school-wide announcements are being made.

On Friday they’ll be collecting during lunch periods, when there be an added incentive. Those who donate $10 or more will receive a T-shirt emblazoned with the phrase “Do Work,” which is the student-decided theme for this Friday’s boys’ basketball game.

“The idea behind ‘Do Work’ is to show that we’re doing work to help Hurricane Sandy victims and that our basketball team is also going to do work to win throughout the season,” Walker explained. “Since that’s the theme of Friday’s game, we’re encouraging students to wear construction hats, vests and similar items.”

The cheerleaders hope to raise $1,000 by “selling” 100 T-shirts, which were donated to them by Haasz Auto Mall in Ravenna. (Twin sisters Karissa and Kendall Haasz, juniors at Hoover, are both cheerleaders.)

Any T-shirts not distributed during lunch Friday will be available during the basketball game when the cheerleaders are collecting donations.
