Friends Since Hoover High Days, Kent Students Earn Awards

Alyssa DeGeorge and Flannery Haas share a lasting bond and design awards at a Kent State show

Editor's note: Doug Lane, president of the North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce, submitted the following article about the recent accolades of his step-daughter, Alyssa DeGeorge, and her best friend, Flannery Hass. They have gone from Hoover High buddies to award-winning students at Kent State University.

Two North Canton college students received awards for Best Design and Illustration Portfolio at the last week’s Kent State University BFA Senior Show.  Alyssa DeGeorge and Flannery Haas were honored at an event held on the Kent campus. Both are enrolled in Kent State’s Visual Communication Design (VCD) degree program. What makes the story even more interesting is that they are roommates and have been best friends since attending . Both played JV and Varsity Girls Soccer at Hoover.

Alyssa is a dual-major in VCD and Journalism and Flannery is a VCD major. In addition to their academic studies, they work as art directors at The Tannery Communications in Kent and as designers for the Daily Kent Stater.

Alyssa also serves as a designer for The Burr magazine and has written for both The Burr and the Stater. She interned last summer for Uniontown’s Grabowski & Company and will intern at Boston magazine this summer. Flannery was a design intern at Kelly Wearstler, Incorporated in Los Angeles in summer 2011.

Alyssa is the daughter of Amy Lane and step-daughter of Doug Lane. Flannery is the daughter of Tom and Rochelle Haas, all of North Canton.
