'Signature' Walls on Main Street Leaning

Have you noticed that the brick walls on Main Street are leaning toward the street?

To have a unified look on Main Street, the City of North Canton put up some brick walls along businesses between 1994 and 2006 that are unfortunately leaning and need to be replaced.

The 3-foot walls aren't a complete loss, but many are sloping toward the street near some office complexes at the 700 block of South Main Street.

Ward 4 Councilman Jon Snyder said in a Canton Repository story that he had hoped the walls, which he voted for years ago, would last more than 30 years.

Unfortunately, the walls need to be fixed, replaced or removed all together. A cost is not known at this time.

City Engineer Jim Benekos will examine the walls closer, but until then the mayor said there is no danger involved with the bricks yet.

Snyder told the Canton Repository the walls are holding back large amounts of soil and none of them were built with the proper drainage or foundation. Rainwater caught in the wall that freezes and thaws may be to blame for the lean.
