Police Get New Contract and No Pay Raises

North Canton officers could see an annual stipend, but they will not receive pay raises after agreeing to a new three-year contract

Patrol and ranking officers at the will sign on for three-year contracts that do not include pay raises.

Law Director Hans Nilges announced the contract details at Monday night’s North Canton City Council meeting, saying the officers are eligible for a $500 yearly stipend. (The stipend is a one-time, non-compounding payment.) And that’s if they complete continuing-education programs and get their firearms certification.

They’re able to discuss wages in the third year of the contract.

“No new employees in any of the units will be receiving longevity pay,” Nilges added. “New employees in the units will only have their sick pay cashed out at 25 percent of the maximum 240 hours. Currently it’s unlimited cash out at 50 percent.”

Council approved the agreements Monday night.

In other business:

  • Council had its first reading of an ordinance allocating $100,000 for the Fairways Golf Improvements Project, which aims to fix drainage problems and flooding around the . City officials discussed building a detention basin on the northwest corner to keep water from flowing into the Zimber Ditch a drainage ditch on the southeast corner. That ditch would hold water that was previously flooding the areas around Heatherwood Street and Wilkshire Circle SW.
  • Nilges said the city collected nearly $16,000 in unpaid city income taxes and $2,275 in court costs through the city’s Mayor’s Court.
  • City Administrator Michael Grimes reminded residents the city’s is from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, and trick-or-treat is from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
  • said council sent a letter to the Ohio Auditor’s Office regarding the and awaits a response to move forward with the plan.
