On the Agenda: Firm Could Serve as City's Law Director

The city would keep Hans Nilges as law director, but it would allow Nilges' colleagues to also provide services to the city. Council will have its first reading on this ordinance tonight.

Council will have its first reading tonight on an ordinance that would allow the firm Morrow & Meyer LLC to assume responsibilities of the city law director.

Council members first talked about the possibility .

Law Director Hans Nilges would remain the city's law director, but if the ordinance were approved, others from the firm Morrow & Meyer could work with the city. Nilges is a partner at that firm.

Council President Jon Snyder said the city pays Nilges $52,000 per year and more than $5,600 in benefits. He's required to work 16 hours per week, or 64 hours a month.

If they hire the firm to perform the duties of law director, the city would pay $50,000 a year and would have four additional hours of service a week for a total of 80 hours per month.

Council members will meet at 6:45 p.m. inside North Canton City Hall and immediately move into executive session to discuss dismissal, demotion or compensation of a public employee. Council of the whole will then meet for an open session at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to speak at this meeting.
