North Canton's Main Street Resurfacing Project Under Way

Construction will take place at Main and Maple streets, while workers also repare catch basins along Main Street

If you’ve traveled through the heart of North Canton this week, you likely noticed the slowed traffic along Main Street and giant machinery sitting at Main and Maple streets.

It’s all part of the Main Street resurfacing project, and construction could last until the end of June.

City Engineer Jim Benekos said construction will take place between the south end of Rose Lane and the north end of 7th Street along Main Street. Workers primarily are resurfacing the road, but they also are replacing catch basins and curb ramps so that they’re compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

And that heavy machinery at town square — near City Hall and the Hoover District — is used to replace all the concrete and brick in the road. Benekos said the brick was wearing down and parts of the road had raised, while other parts had sunk.

Benekos advises motorists to mind the detour signs and be patient when traveling. He said construction workers are working as quickly as they can to complete the project.

The city received federal money through the Ohio Department of Transportation to pay for 80 percent of the project, while the other 20 percent came from the Ohio Public Works Commission.

Total construction cost is $1,034,073.
