New Ranking Structure at Police Department to Save City Money

North Canton City Council gave its OK on the restructuring Monday night. The department now will have one lieutenant (instead of two) and five sergeants.

North Canton City Council members commended the police department for saving the city money at Monday night's meeting.

The North Canton Police Department would eliminate a lieutenant position in replace of a sergeant position, leaving the department with one lieutenant and five sergeants.

Sergeants employed at the department are paid 9 percent less than lieutenants.

The department had two lieutenant positions before the in March.

Law Director Hans Nilges applauded the police department and the Fraternal Order of Police for their willingness to bring about the changes.

"I have to say, they asked for nothing in return," Nilges said. “That's pretty amazing. The only thing they ask for is that we take it into consideration in 2014 (when they negotiate contracts)."
