Little League Fields Could Get Extra Parking Lot if Planning Commission Gives OK

The North Canton Planning Commission meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday inside City Hall

The North Canton Little League ball fields could see a few extra parking spaces if the Planning Commission gives its OK on a new parking area.

The commission will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday inside Council Chambers in City Hall to discuss the site plan review for a new lot at the ball fields.

According to the meeting's agenda, the city of North Canton submitted the conditional use application/site plan review, which includes adding a parking area for Little League activities and Stark Parks Hoover Trail at 1525 E. Maple St. (Parcel No. 55015615).

"The city has requested the parking lot because we owe it to the neighbors to police and keep the safety and security of these children playing out there," City Council President Jon Snyder said.

North Canton City Council had discussed a proposal for overhead lighting at the ball fields in the past several weeks, and during those discussions, several residents expressed their concern about lack of parking.

The parking area will be a portion of a 2.9 acre plot owned by the city. It is grass now but will be covered in gravel if it's approved as a parking area. That area can fit 60-80 cars, Snyder said.

"That should give some relief to on-street parking and some of the problems they've had over there," he added.

The proposed overhead lights will be considered separately at an upcoming Planning Commission meeting, most likely in April.
