Council Rejects Zoning Change That Would Allow Construction of Apartments on Applegrove

North Canton City Council members said a proposed amendment to the zoning code was rife with issues and voted it down at Monday night's Council meeting

City Council members cited a few reasons Monday night for rejecting the North Canton Planning Commission's recommendation to change a zoning code that would on Applegrove Street, across from .

First, the parcel numbers in the recommendation were incorrect, members said. They also said some neighbors were not notified of the proposed ordinance, which would change three parcels from Residential-Two Family, R-2F, to General Business A, GB-A. That's because one parcel was missing from the recommendation.

"It's a flawed request," Council President Jon Snyder said.

Councilwoman-at-large Marcia Kiesling said the process will essentially start from the beginning now. The property owners may submit their request to the Planning Commission again at no charge.

City residents had showed to the June 11 meeting to express their disapproval of the proposed rezoning, saying there's already enough temporary housing in North Canton and the addition of apartment buildings in that area would disrupt the lives of the neighbors there. Thirty-nine people had signed a petition against the change, they said. 

They echoed similar concerns Monday night.

In other business: 

  • Council voted to change the city’s housing code to allow for the demolishing of homes after the approval of the Zoning Board and with the costs to be assessed to the owner.
  • Council approved a resolution of support regarding the . The resolution would authorize city administration to work with the North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce to obtain funding for the signage.
