Here's a recap of what happened at the North Canton City Council meeting Monday night:

  • Council had its third reading to approve the organization of the Committee, which would help financially the victims of natural disasters like those affected by the summer flooding. The committee would be responsible for distributing the money. Residents may contribute to the fund through their tax forms each year.
  • Council members agreed to , saying the city rarely is liable for many filed claims. And if the city is found liable, insurance plans generally cover the damages.
  • Council members wished Council Clerk Gail Kalpac a happy birthday.
  • Council heard from Chuck Osborne, who is displeased with the low volume of city council meeting recordings, which are available as public records.
  • Ward 3 Councilman Tim Fox reminded community members students are to benefit the Stark County Humane Society, and that drive ends March 22.
  • Finance Director Karen Alger and Council President Jon Snyder commended the community for passing the .
  • City Administrator Michael Grimes said the city has started street sweeping and advised those residents whose streets haven't been swept to be patient.
  • Mayor David Held talked about North Canton and Suarez Corp. Industries (the company manufacturing EdenPure heaters in the Hoover District) being featured on the CBS Evening News. (Find the full story and video here.) The story focuses on the company bringing jobs back to the U.S. from China. A German news organization also inquired about what the city is doing to bring jobs back from China as well as a new show called Factories, which may feature the city on one of its first episodes, Held said.

"North Canton is getting a lot of attention," Held said. "And I think it's because we're doing the right thing by working with the businesses and the community and we're brining jobs back."
