Stark County will have a new sheriff next week, but it won't be the man voters elected in November.
Sheriff-elect Michael A. McDonald, 54, had announced in early January that he is not medically fit to take office as he continues to battle esophageal cancer, and now Stark County Democrats will meet next week to appoint the next sheriff, according to the Canton Repository.
Tim Swanson is the county's current sheriff. He did not run for reelection in 2012, and voters elected McDonald to the position of Stark County sheriff.
According to the Canton Repository, the Stark County Democrats will likely have their choice of three candidates: Stark County Sheriff Lt. Louis Darrow, Hartville Police Chief Lawrence Dordea and Massillon Safety-Service Director George Maier.
