$1 Million in Grant Dollars Not Enough to Finish Hoover District Project

The city engineer may be approaching North Canton City Council for $100,000 in city funds.

The city may need to pitch in $100,000 to finish a Hoover District project, an upgrade that wasn't supposed to cost the city any money originally.

The Canton Repository reports that state grants were supposed to take care of paying for the widening and upgrading of E. Maple Street, realigning McKinley Avenue SE and expanding Taft Avenue SE's sidewalk.

But now, City Engineer Jim Benekos said he may ask council for $100,000 in city funds to finish the project. Originally, Benekos said he wouldn't need all of the $1 million in Job Ready Sites grant funds to do the renovations.

However, the newspaper reports that when projects were added onto the upgrades — like realignment of McKinley Avenue away from the rear entrance of the North Canton YMCA — a cost was also added.
