Updated: Investigators Looking Into Cause of Tuesday Fire

North Canton fire officials still aren't sure what caused the blaze, which destroyed a townhouse in the 400 block of Sherbrook Circle

investigators still are trying to determine the cause of a house fire that caused $850,000 in damages Tuesday.

First-in crews discovered the fire in the attic area above the family room in the four-apartment, two-floor townhouse at 413 Sherbrook Circle.

Firefighters responded at 2:51 p.m. and had the fire under control at 3:40. The fire caused extensive damages to the second floor apartments.

Crews remained there until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release from the North Canton Fire Department.

Carol Eckman of 413-C and Shirley Prandine of 413-B were inside when the fire broke out. No injuries were reported, and responders saved four cats from one apartment.

Passerby Richard Miller saw fire coming from the roof of the building and as he alerted the occupants, his kids Alexandrea and Noah called 911 to report the fire.

Damage is estimated at $500,000 to the structure and $350,000 to the contents. Exposure damage to a neighboring house is about $15,000.

The Fire Prevention Bureau is investigating the cause.

Mutual aid arrived from Greentown and Plain Township fire departments. Jackson Township Fire Department manned North Canton's station as they responded to the fire.
