Unlocked Vehicles, Homes Make Easy Targets For Thieves

The following information was supplied by the North Canton Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

City residents who left their homes or vehicles unlocked became the victims of thieves, according to several reports.

Tools worth $2,300 stolen from construction worker

A resident of the 400 block of Portage Street Northwest went out to his unlocked 2008 Ford F150 early morning July 25 to find it had been ransacked, according to a July 27 police report. Two days later the construction worker discovered that his Makita drill and driver set valued at $2,300 was missing. The theft occurred sometime between 11 p.m. July 24 and 6:30 a.m. July 25.

$1,200 TV taken from unlocked home

The owner of an unlocked home in the 200 block of Bachtel Street Southwest was only gone just over an hour, but that was enough time for a thief to make off with her 42-inch LG flat-screen television valued at $1,200. The senior-citizen victim told police on July 22 that the theft occurred between 9:45 and 11 a.m. that day while she was out.

Thief takes change from car, bike from shed

A resident of the 300 block of Williaman Avenue Northwest told police on July 25 that about $5 in change had been stolen from an unlocked 2007 Honda and a $100 bike had been stolen from an unlocked shed on the property. The incident occurred between 11:30 p.m. July 24 and 7:53 p.m.  July 25.

Wallet goes missing from unlocked car

The owner of an unlocked 2006 Kia Rio parked in the 200 block of South Main Street overnight called police at 4:19 p.m. July 27 to report that her wallet had been stolen. Contained in the wallet were the woman’s Ohio driver’s license, Social Security card, Kent State University student ID, medical insurance cards and numerous credit cards. The theft occurred sometime between 6:12 p.m. July 26 and 8 a.m. July 27.

Thief turns off water main before stealing pipes

The Alliance owner of an unoccupied home in the 300 block of Middlesworth Avenue Southwest told police on July 23 that someone had broken in and stolen 50 feet of half-inch diameter copper pipe valued at $55. The crime occurred sometime between 11:45 p.m. July 19 and 9 a.m. July 23, and the thief had turned off the main water supply.

Juvenile suspected of smashing car window

The rear window of 1999 Honda Accord was smashed during the afternoon of July 28 while parked outside the owner’s home in the 400 block of Holl Road Northeast. A neighbor called the car owner to inform him of “a juvenile lurking around his vehicle” just after 3:30 p.m. When the owner went outside to investigate, he discovered the window had been smashed. Damages are estimated at $200.

Rear garage door kicked in

Residents of the 700 block of Summit Street Southeast returned home in the early afternoon of July 24 to find that the rear door into their garage had been kicked in, causing $300 in damages. The residents, who were gone only two hours when the criminal damaging occurred, told police it didn’t appear anything had been taken.

Store’s display stroller rolls away

An Eddie Bauer stroller valued at $50 was reported stolen July 28 from outside a store in the 1500 block of North Main Street, according to a July 28 police report. The stroller, which was being displayed outside the business, was taken sometime between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. July 25. Police said employees didn’t realize the stroller was missing until closing time, and none recalled anyone around or inquiring about it.
