Suspected Serial Bank Robber Indicted for 6 Northeast Ohio Holdups

A grand jury in Cleveland returned an indictment charging Benjamin G. Gates, 33, of Canton, with six counts of bank robbery. Those include heists in Cuyahoga Falls and North Canton.

Suspected serial bank robber Benjamin Gates may not see the light of day anytime soon.

On Tuesday, a Cleveland Grand Jury handed down an indictment charging Gates, 33, of Canton, with six counts of felony bank robbery, according to Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.

Following a six-week crime spree, Gates was arrested last month in Canton by members of the Safe Streets Task Force comprised of FBI agents, officers from the Canton and Alliance Police Department, and the Ohio Adult Parole Authority.

His capture was due, in large part, to a witness who spotted him fleeing a U.S. Bank in Cuyahoga Falls on Aug. 16.

“This case reflects the valued partnership between the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force and the citizens of Northern Ohio,” said Stephen D. Anthony, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Cleveland office. “Subsequent to the media’s rapid release of key information, the public provided invaluable leads resulting in the arrest of Benjamin Gates.”

The following banks he’s suspected of robbing include:

  • July 2: U.S. Bank, located inside the Fishers Food store at 4403 Cleveland Ave. in Canton.
  • July 20: U.S. Bank, located inside the Giant Eagle at 75 Graham Rd. in Cuyahoga Falls.
  • July 27: Huntington Bank, located inside the Giant Eagle at 4700 Belmont Ave. in Youngstown.
