Stephan B. Wilder Appointed to Chief of Police

Wilder has been with the department for 30 years

After serving with the North Canton Police Department for 30 years, Stephan B. Wilder has been appointed by Mayor David Held as the new police chief.

Wilder has served as an auxiliary officer, part-time and full-time patrolman, and spent the last 14 years as a lieutenant, according to a media release.

He graduated from Canton Glenwood High School, has a Master of Science in Criminal Justice Studies from Kent State University and completed the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Police and Command and the Ohio Police Association of Chiefs of Police Executive Leadership College.

In his tenure, he has received several honors including being a two-time recipient of the Knights of Columbus Blue Coat of the Year Award, Eagle Scout Award, James A. West and the Silver Beaver Awards from the Boy Scouts of America Buckeye Council, according to a media release.

He has lived in the area and been married to his wife Mary for more than 31 years.

Wilder will be sworn in at 6 p.m. on May 23 at City Hall, and the public is welcome to attend. Wilder will assume the duties of chief effective May 29.
