Sheriff-Elect Michael A. McDonald, 54, Dies After Extended Illness

McDonald was elected sheriff in November 2012 and had announced in January that he would not take office because of issues in battling esophageal cancer

Michael A. McDonald, the man Stark County voters chose as the county's 47th sheriff, has passed away.

McDonald had won the seat over Republican candidate Lawrence A. Dordea in the November 2012 election. Then, McDonald had announced in January that he would not take office because of issues in battling esophageal cancer.

Former sheriff Timothy Swanson, a former boss and longtime friend of McDonald's, told the Canton Repository that he'd heard of McDonald's passing shortly after 7 p.m. Friday.
