Sheriff Destroying Retired Flags in Solemn Ceremony Friday

The Summit County Sheriff's Color Guard, Summa Protective Services Color Guard, the Sheriff's Mounted Patrol Unit and K-9 Unit, Group III Civil Air Patrol Squadron, numerous Boy Scout Troops and various military groups are participating in the event.

On Friday, the Summit County Sheriff Department will retire flags that are no longer suitable for service.

In a Facebook post, Sheriff Steve Barry invited the public — with a special invitation to all veterans, veteran groups, youth organizations, Boy and Girl Scouts — to the ceremony June 14 at 7 p.m. at the Robert D. Campbell Training Center in North Canton. The training center is located at 2825 Greensburg Rd., North Canton.

Flags will be inspected and prepared in accordance with the tradition of solemn dignity and military manner. "According to Federal Law, when a flag is no longer fit for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner," Barry said in a press release

Those who plan to attend are asked to arrive by at least 6:30 p.m. Once the ceremony begins, cars will not be allowed in the parking lot.

Parking will be at the training center and also on West Airport Drive, which is located directly across from the Training center. (Shuttles will be provided.)
