Sherbrook Circle Townhouse Unlivable After Fire

The residence comprises four apartments, all of which are unlivable after an afternoon blaze

officials were uncertain this evening what had caused a fire that destroyed a four-apartment townhouse on Sherwood Circle.

Firefighters responded just before 3 p.m. and spent about 45 minutes battling the blaze. They stayed well into the evening tending to smoldering sections and ensuring the safety of residents and adjacent homes.

"I could see smoke from the station when we left," Fire Capt. Gary Coen said. "It was coming out of the east side."

Coen said one person was home at the time, and the woman already was out of the house and across the street when firefighters arrived. He wasn't sure if the resident or a neighbor or passerby had called 911.

Responders rescued four cats and treated a couple of them in a nearby garage. Coen didn't know if the apartments housed other animals other than the four cats.

The fire's cause is unknown, as well as where it originated. Coen said it started somewhere on the second floor of the two-story building.

He noted nothing unusual about the fire, other than the time it broke out.

"It was just unusual to have a fire like this at 3 o'clock in the afternoon," he said.

The fire caused heat, smoke and water damage throughout the building and damaged the siding of a neighboring home.

Mutual aid arrived from Greentown and Plain Township fire departments. Jackson Township Fire Department manned North Canton's station as they responded to the fire.
