North Canton Man in Jail After 2-Hour Standoff With Gun and 3-Year-Old

Shane M. Kinsley, 22, is in the Stark County Jail after locking himself and his 3-year-old child in his apartment with a gun Sunday night

A North Canton man is in jail today after he barricaded himself and his 3-year-old child inside their home with a gun Sunday night.

Shane M. Kinsley, 22, is charged with domestic violence and using weapons while intoxicated, both first-degree misdemeanors. He also faces a felony count of endangering children. He’s in the Stark County Jail on $10,000 and $1,000 bonds, jail officials confirmed this morning.

North Canton Police Sgt. Frank Kemp Jr. said Kinsley’s wife called 911 at 6:47 p.m. from their home in the 1700 block of Beechwood Ave. NE, saying her husband pulled out a gun and told her to leave their apartment.

“Her concern was he had been drinking earlier and their 3-year-old child was still in the apartment with him,” Kemp said.

He said Kinsley never threatened to harm himself or harm the child.

Police called Kinsley on his cellphone, which he didn’t answer, and they also tried getting inside the apartment through the front door. Special Response Team members arrived and made contact with Kinsley.

Kemp said about 12 officers overall had responded.

Kinsley opened the door for officers and was taken into custody at 8:33 p.m. No injuries were reported, Kemp said.

Kinsley is slated for arraignment at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Canton Municipal Court, according to online court documents.
