Highway Patrol: North Canton Man Involved in Fatal Crash

Officials at the New Philadelphia post of the State Highway Patrol say a car swerved into that of David R. Duncan of North Canton before careening off the roadway on I-77 Sunday

The New Philadelphia Post of the State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that involved a North Canton driver Sunday.

Here's the account patrol officials give: David R. Duncan, 52, of North Canton, was driving a 2004 Honda Civic south on I-77 in the left lane about 8:30 a.m. Sunday. His car carried three other people.

Victor Nelson, 76, of Hiram, was driving a 2002 Kia Rio south on I-77 in the right lane.

The cars were about a half mile south of mile post 86 in Dover Township.

Nelson's car traveled into the left lane and struck Duncan's car, then Nelson swerved off the right side of the roadway, taking his car down an embankment before striking a tree.

The Tuscarawas County Coroner pronounced Nelson dead at the scene, while his passenger, Thelma Nelson, was taken to Aultman Hospital for injuries.

Officials say alcohol is not suspected in the crash, and Nelson was wearing a seatbelt.
