Grand Jury to Review Charges Against Teen Driver in Sept. 17 Crash

Kyle D. Byelene was charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular assault after wrecking a car and injuring himself and four friends Sept. 17

The case involving a teen who injured himself and four friends in is now in the hands of Stark County prosecutors. 

Ohio Highway Patrol officials had issued a warrant for the arrest of Kyle D. Byelene, 18, of Canton, who was driving the car that crashed Sept. 17 near Pittsburg Avenue and Applegrove Street. Byelene turned himself in at Canton Municipal Court after the warrant was issued, patrol officials said.

He faces two charges of aggravated vehicular assault, both third-degree felonies. The case now awaits a review before a grand jury.

Patrol officials say Byelene was driving north on Pittsburg Avenue just south of Applegrove Street in a 2002 Acura TL in the early morning on Sept 17. Byelene tried to pass a car on the right on the two-lane road, taking the car off the right side of the roadway before hitting a mailbox and utility pole.

He had been wearing his seatbelt and was taken to Aultman Hospital with serious injuries. He was released from the hospital Sept. 27.

Passenger Kristi Morris, 15, of North Canton, was taken to Aultman Hospital with serious injuries. She was later transferred to Akron Children’s Hospital and released Sept. 24.

Passenger Seth M. Noble, 18, of North Canton, was taken to Mercy Medical Center. He was the right front passenger and had not been wearing a seatbelt.

Noble spent several weeks in the hospital while his family members kept the community updated on his condition through the "Prayers for Seth Noble" Facebook event page. The page garnered nearly 3,000 "attendants." His mother posted Oct. 28 that her son had returned home.

Also injured were Brandon Lee Miller, 16, of North Canton; and Tyler R. Maloy, 15, of Uniontown. Both were wearing seatbelts and were taken to Aultman Hospital, where they were treated and later released.

Patrol officials said they believe alcohol was involved in the crash.
