City Man Assaults Police Officer, Tries to Take Gun

Jay H. Schweitzer, 25, charged with felonious assault on a North Canton police officer and resisting arrest.

A city man was arrested and jailed on a felony charge early Wednesday morning after fighting with North Canton Police officers and trying to take one of their guns, according to Chief Stephan Wilder.

Jay H. Schweitzer, 25, of 148 Wise Ave. S.E., was charged with felonious assault on a police officer, a first-degree felony, and resisting arrest, a first-degree misdemeanor, after an incident on East Maple Street that resulted in slight injuries to a city officer.

Wilder said in a press release issued Thursday that at about 5:23 a.m. Wednesday a female motorist traveling in the 1000 block of East Maple “saw a man walking on the sidewalk acting out loudly as if he was disturbed in some way.”

The woman flagged down an officer on patrol in the area, reporting that she was disturbed by the actions of the pedestrian.

Officers, seeking to check on his welfare, located Schweitzer in the 800 block of East Maple and saw that he was “acting out in an agitated manner,” Wilder said.

Police learned Schweitzer had outstanding misdemeanor arrest warrants and “when officers were attempting to take him into custody he tried to run away and fought with them. At one point, Schweitzer tried to remove the firearm of one of the officers he was fighting with,” Wilder said.

Once officers gained control of Schweitzer they arrested him on the outstanding warrants, as well as on the new felonious assault and resisting arrest charges. He was transported to the Stark County Jail.

Wilder said the officer who was slightly injured during the incident did not seek medical treatment at that time.

Stark County Court online records list Schweitzer’s address as 1431 Skyway St. N.E. in North Canton, and show that his arraignment is set for 9 a.m. today.

Court records show Schweitzer was found guilty of possession of drug paraphernalia in 2005, guilty of possession of marijuana in 2007, guilty of domestic violence in both 2007 and 2008 and guilty of possession of drug paraphernalia in 2009.

According to online court records, the outstanding warrants for Schweitzer’s arrest stem from March 2011 charges of speeding and driving under suspension in Canton and September 2011 charges of driving under suspension and failure to comply with a North Canton Police officer.
