McDonald, 54, passed away Friday after battling esophageal cancer

Calling hours for Sheriff-Elect Michael A. McDonald will take place from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. today at the Canton Civic Center's McKinley Room.

McDonald, a 32-year member of the Stark County Sheriff's Office, died Friday.

McDonald had won the seat over Republican candidate Lawrence A. Dordea in the November 2012 election. Then, McDonald had announced in January that he would not take office because of issues in battling esophageal cancer.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Louis Catholic Church in Louisville with Fr. Lawrence Frient officiating. F.O.P. services will be at 2:45 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in the St. Louis Church Cemetery, Louisville, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to support local cancer patients through the Cancer relief Fund at North Canton Medical Foundation, 6046 Whipple Ave. NW, North Canton.
