Bell Ringer Robbed at Knifepoint May Have Taken His Own Kettle Money

The Salvation Army bell ringer told police in November that he was robbed at knifepoint by four masked men, but police say he may have lied and taken the money for himself

Police say the man who was robbed at knifepoint by four masked men at K-Mart may have made the whole thing up. His story just didn't add up, said.

The man told police that four masked men approached him while he was at K-Mart working as a Salvation Army bell ringer just after 7 p.m. Nov. 19. One man lifted his shirt and showed him a knife, the man told police.

But police say the bell ringer — Kevin J. Weitzel, 24, of Canton — fabricated the story and took the money for himself. He's charged with theft and falsification, both first-degree misdemeanors. Police arrested him Tuesday and booked him into the Stark County Jail.
