Shortly after telling Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer that he wouldn’t make any changes until the end of the season, Haslam has already made his first ‘change’. Mike Holmgren is out, and Joe Banner is in.
The details of the ‘change’ go like this…
- Mike Holmgren will remain President of the Browns until the end of this season.
- Joe Banner will be CEO effective October 25th.
Haslam went on to say in his press conference that “he has spent more time with Mike Holmgren than anyone else in the organization” and that “he and Mike have a great relationship.” The plan to overlap Holmgren and Banner is to help “make the transition as seamless as possible."
Who’s next to be pushed out the door you ask? Well, Haslam hit that one head onbefore Q & A even started. “This will be the only personnel change we will make before the end of the season” and “I’m not saying there will be any personnel changes at the end of the season."
Let me translate that for you: Shurmur and Heckert are safe for now. Barring a miraculous turnaround, it’s likely that one (probably Shurmur) or both could be dismissed at the end of the season.
How do you feel about the change in ownership and the direction of the team at this point? What other house-keeping items do you think Haslam should address now or later?
