"A Little Traveling Music" Performance/Lecture

As part of the exhibit Journey
Stories
, the North Canton Heritage Society will be hosting “A Little
Traveling Music,” a performance and lecture featuring music historian Priscilla
Hewetson. Hewetson will explore songs we have traveled with through time, from
folk tunes to modern music. This free event will be held at the nearby North
Canton Public Library Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m.

Hewetson, an American music educator, director
and performer, is now an Interpretive Specialist at the Ohio Historical Society
in Columbus, and utilizes music to interpret history. Her lecture will feature
songs from the first settlers from Europe as well as other historical events in
American culture. Hewetson believes people’s migrations are often reflected in
song.

North Canton Public Library and Heritage
Society teamed up to feature Hewetson in honor of the exhibition, Journey Stories. The exhibition is a
compelling demonstration from the Smithsonian that shows how our evolving
mobility changed a young nation and how transportation made us grow. The
stories of travelers express hope, the grim realities of forced migration,
difficult journeys, and the thrills of personal travel.  Visitors will have the opportunity to see a
photo exhibit, “North Canton on the Move,” representing how local residents
moved from place to place through the years.
