Organizers: Response to North Main Community Market is Great

Market organizer Jim Sewell said he saw a great response from the community at the first meeting to organize the community market this weekend

It's safe to say the community supports the creation of the North Main Community Market.

It’s the structural backbone the market lacks at this point.

“There's just an amazing amount of response to this thing," organizer Jim Sewell said. "People are very interested in it. But as far as getting an entity, a structure, an organization gong at this point, that hasn’t materialized.”

Sewell had hoped that after a meeting Saturday at the  that an organization of vendors and community members would form. The organization would help to establish the market before anything else. (Sewell also envisions a cafe, artist studios and urban garden at the market.)

The North Main Community Market would be a lot like the West Side Market in Cleveland or North Market in Columbus.

Sewell also had hoped someone might come forward and take a leadership role in the project, as he's splitting his time between his home in Tuscon and the area he once lived — North Canton and Northeast Ohio.

Although Sewell and his family live in Arizona, they have a desire to better the Stark County area, where their roots are.

“We have family members here and some are out of work,” he said. “We want to put the land and people back to work. We want to get things moving again. It’s a lot of different factors. Just seems like the thing to do and it seems like the place to do it.”

Even without the formation of an organization, the weekend meeting still was successful, and people’s enthusiasm for the project is encouraging, Sewell said.

“It catches people’s interest. It catches their imagination. It’s just a matter of catching some momentum and pushing it forward.”

Anyone interested in taking part in the community market can contact Sewell through the market website.
