For our new weekly feature "Patch Picks," we decided to highlight five local nonprofits that make a difference in and around North Canton. If you know of any that aren't listed, please share them with us in the comments section below.

  • Homes4Kids consists of a passionate group of people with a strong desire to help women with children who are in need of housing. This Canton nonprofit is completely volunteer-based and believes every child deserves a place to call home. In addition to housing, Homes4Kids also offers support in financial budgeting, counseling and after-school tutoring through a mentoring program. If you are passionate about helping a mother so she can raise her children in a safe environment, this could be the organization for you.
  • is a North Canton-based nonprofit that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses in Ohio. Its main objective is to put a smile on the the face of their wish children, while also creating a happy memory for the family. Wishes Can Happen is an all-volunteer nonprofit. The average wish cost is $4, 710. There are many ways to offer your support, and creativity is encouraged at Wishes Can Happen.
  • New Works City Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to helping create jobs and improve the community through social and entrepreneurial partnerships with education, small businesses and community groups. They have a simple yet effective philosophy to have fun, raise money and then give the money back to the community. New Works always looks for people to help in planning and development of  events.
  • is a private, nonprofit, community-based organization whose mission is to empower children and families to realize their full potential and to achieve their goals through innovative mental health, foster care and adoption services. The nonprofit, based in North Canton, recently partnered with Quest Recovery and Prevention Services to help address the growing issues of drug and alcohol abuse in children. Pathway’s biggest need is loving foster families to step up and be willing to provide a safe and loving home for children.
  • The Canton Chapter of the Foundation for Community Betterment began in 2007 with a small event to increase awareness of the group and its mission of creating an immediate, positive impact in the community. Since then, the Canton chapter has raised more than $24,000 with two charity events and distributed its proceeds to seven local families and two community organizations in need of assistance. The foundation’s growth has remained grassroots, keeping it small and family-like. This social, philanthropic group is looking for enthusiastic people to expand their organization.
