Five Things You Should Know About Building Permits

If you live in North Canton and are thinking of building a deck, putting a new roof on the house or other additions or upgrades, call the North Canton Permits Office first. According to Judy Juenemann, coordinator, it can save you time and money.

1. In North Canton, you need a permit for “everything” including putting on a new roof, adding a deck, building an addition to the house, a new sidewalk and any plumbing, heating or electrical work, among other things. Judy Juenemann, coordinator of the North Canton Permits Office, recommends people call the department first before starting on any project to see if they need a permit.

2. North Canton residents can get building permits at the North Canton Permits and Inspection Office at 220 W. Maple St. in North Canton. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

3. If you are applying for a building permit that involves zoning, you will need to bring a plot plan with location and what they are putting up or rebuilding along with a drawing from the contractor of how it will be built. Plot plans, according to Juenemann, usually come with the paperwork when purchasing or building a house. You can also obtain a plot plan from the Stark County Auditors website or you may have to hire a private surveyor to determine where the property lines are located. Plus, the contractor(s) used for the project have to be registered with North Canton.

4. The cost of a building permit is determined by the size of the project. Juenemann said the inspection fee is $75 plus a 1 percent state fee for residential or a 3 percent state fee for commercial projects. The bigger the project, the more expensive the permit cost.

5. Call the building and inspection office for any questions regarding living in North Canton. Juenemann said their office does many other things beyond issuing building permits. They are a “one-stop shop” and can save you a lot of time calling or driving to multiple locations.
