The Census data is a massive trove of information, so the plan here is to highlight some interesting facts gleaned from the data.

1. North Canton is largely white, but diversity is growing

North Canton has 17,488 people, according to the Census. Describing themselves as white are 16,585 people, or about 94.8 percent of the population. In 2000, whites made up 96.9 percent of the population.

Asians make up about 1 percent and blacks 2 percent of the population.

2. Minority populations are younger

About 39 percent of Hispanics in North Canton are under 19 years old, while 30 percent of people with Asian heritage are under 19, and 28 percent of blacks are younger than 19. About 22 percent of the white population is below 19.

3. Average family size is higher for Asian, black populations

The average family size in North Canton is just below three (2.82).

Asian families are the largest in the city at 3.49 people per family. Following are black families at 2.97 and white families at 2.81. Hispanic families are the smallest in the city, with 2.65 people per family.

4. Whites have highest home ownership rate; blacks have lowest

About 69 percent of white households own their own home, or 5,020 out of 7,258 households. Hispanic households came in behind white households, percentage-wise, with 50 of 83 households owning their own home, or about 60 percent.

Black and Asian households were the least likely to own their own homes, and home ownership rates were much lower than the national average of about 65 percent.

About 41 percent of Asian households live in a home they own, while the rate for blacks is 23 percent.

5. Asians are the smallest group in North Canton

There are only 200 people in North Canton who label themselves Asian, and there are only 78 households that contain Asian people.
