5 Things You Should Know About North Canton This Week

1. North Canton City Council will meet at 7 p.m. tonight in City Hall. On the agenda is the first reading of an ordinance that would allow Mayor David Held to extend . (See tonight’s agenda in the PDFs section of this update.)

2. Businesses and individuals around Stark County will get some recognition at Friday’s Best of Stark County Awards Luncheon, taking place at the Lakeside Center in Navarre. Your North Canton Patch editor will be there, camera in hand, to bring you video coverage of the event that day.

3. The will host a from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. It’s free and open to anyone concerned with the sun and skincare. Interested in a free skin cancer screening? Just call 330-433-1570 for an appointment.

4. Did you know residents can recycle yard waste through the city? The city announced this last week, but the program runs through June 10. Just put yard waste paper bags at the curbside on your regular trash day. (Careful, though: If the yard waste is in plastic bags it will go to the landfill with the regular trash.) The city does not give out the paper bags, so residents must buy them at a store.

5. The North Canton Special Olympics is from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The North Canton Jaycees had asked for volunteers to help with the annual event. If interested, email Jennifer Geh or call the 330-499-5615.

Ten percent of sales, plus tips, will go to the family of Danica Snyder. Danica is a 3-year-old with chiari malformation, a rare disorder that has required multiple brain and spinal surgeries. The money will help the family deal with mounting medical bills.
