New York Times Best Selling author Linda Castillo visits SCDL, plus Teen Jeopardy Tournaments and More

Did you know the Stark County District Library is More Than Books? Each week your library presents numerous informative, inspiring, and entertaining programs for all ages, from children’s story times to computer skills classes.  This week’s schedule includes visits from authors of Amish Country Mystery novels, Amanda Flower and Linda Castillo, great programs for teens, and a visit from the colorful World of Difference Interactive Show for kids grades K-3.

As always, each program listed below is linked to the Stark County District Library Events calendar, where you'll get more information about the program (such as the time the event is offered), and have the opportunity to register online or by phone to attend.

The Exercise Your Mind Summer Reading Challenge is in full swing and continues through July 27. Kids ages newborn through 12th grade can pledge to read 1 to 100 books this summer and win prizes for meeting the Challenge. This year we’re using a neat online system for tracking participants’ reading—the instructions are here.

Agatha Award nominated author Amanda Flower visits Lake Community Branch on Tuesday, June 18 at 7:00 pm. She started her career as an author in elementary school, and she’ll be here to share her latest book, the Amish Country thriller, A Plain Scandal, as well as her other books.

New York Times best selling author Linda Castillo will visit both Lake Community Branch (at 2 pm) and Perry Sippo Branch (at 6:30 pm) on Wednesday, June 19. Castillo is author of several popular Amish Country mystery novels, including Her Last Breath featuring the character Katie Burkholder, an intrepid Ohio police chief. Library Journal says that “Castillo combines the simple Amish lifestyle with dizzying hairpin twists and turns.”

Teens can explore the Middle Branch Trail while discussing the hottest new young adult books at Plain Community Branch’s Trail Talk on Tuesday, June 18. Get out and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine and get some tips on great summer reading.

The library is hosting Teen Jeopardy Tournaments throughout June and July, leading up to the Championship round in August at Main Library. Perry Sippo Branch teens will compete on Monday, June 24. It’s the classic game of answers and questions. More matches are coming to locations near you—here’s a link to all of them.

Also for teens:  it’s your right to be crafty! Try out some of our numerous craft projects on Thursday, June 20 at East Canton Branch, and Exercise Your Right to be Crafty. You might just make something great!

The World of Difference Interactive Show for kids grades K-3 returns to SCDL this week on Wednesday, June 19, and Thursday, June 20. Lindsay Bonilla shares wonderful stories, laughter, props, puppets, and singing and dancing at her energetic and entertaining shows. Here’s a link to all of the World of Difference shows at a location near you.

Christine Kendle from OSU Extension will present Canning Basics with Jam and Jelly on Saturday, June 22 at Main Library. Learn water bath and pressure canning, and check out a jam making demonstration, and preserve some of summer’s delicious fruits for fall and winter treats.

DeHoff Memorial Branch hosts free Blood Pressure Screenings on Monday, June 24. Mercy Medical Center will provide the screenings from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
