Poetry Contest, Genealogy, Masterpiece Book and Film Club, and more this week at Stark County District Library

Poetry Contest, Genealogy with Vital Records, Masterpiece Book and Film Club, and much more this week at Stark County District Library

The library's 13th Annual Poetry Contest is ongoing and accepting original poems this week at Stark County District Library. We've also got a Genealogy program on how to use vital records in your research, the 7th Annual Opportunities Job Workshop and Job Fair, Masterpiece Book and Film Discussion, and a particularly cool program for Teen Art Club.

As always, each program below is linked to the Stark County District Library Events calendar, where you'll get more information about the program (such as the time the event is offered) and have the opportunity to register online or by phone to attend.

The 13th Annual Poetry Contest is in full swing at all branches of the Stark County District Library. It's open to grades 2 through adult, from March 1 through April 30. Poems should be your own original writing and not longer than 250 words--here's the official entry form for all of the details. Winners will be determined by a panel of community judges, and all the poems submitted will be compiled into a booklet that will be available at the Youth Poetry Cafe (May 17) and at Poetry Open Mic Night (May 22). This is also a great contest for teachers to enter class poems.

Speaking of poetry, North Branch will offer a fun family story time, Hickory Dickory Dock... Poetry Story Time on Tuesday, Mar 20. It's a family celebration of poetry with Mother Goose nursery rhymes. And, on Wednesday, Mar 21, Plain Community Branch hosts Let Your Creativity Flow, a great basic poetry writing workshop for those who want to explore the possibilities of poetry.

Also on Wednesday, Mar 21, Books and Something More book club meets at Madge Youtz Branch. It's a book club based on genres and titles you choose, and it's a nice way to give yourself a little 'me' time.

Book Bingo Blowout is scheduled for Thursday, Mar 22 at Perry Sippo Branch. It's literary bingo, with book prizes!

If you're employment hunting, don't miss the Job Fair on Thursday, Mar 22 at Main Library. It's part of the 7th Annual Opportunities Job Fair and Workshop. You can network with representatives from local businesses at the Job Fair. And, if you need some advice about job searching, how to interview, writing a resume, or other job hunting skills, check out the Job Workshop 2 days earlier, on Tuesday, Mar 20.

Are you researching your family tree? Find out what vital records are available and how you can use them for genealogy research at Vital Records, on Saturday, Mar 24 at Perry Sippo Branch.

The second installment of Masterpiece Book and Film Discussion meets at Jackson Township Branch on Monday, Mar 26 to talk about Firewall, One Step Behind or Sidetracked by Henning Mankell.

Teens can learn the art of decoupage at Teen Art Club on Monday, Mar 26 at Perry Sippo Branch. They'll be making cool decoupage collage boxes. What's decoupage? It's the art of decorating a surface by gluing cut paper (sometimes photos, or magazine images, or ephemera) to it and sealing it with various layers of varnish. It's an easy way to decorate a surface and get a really attractive, eye-catching result.

Coming up in a few weeks will be the Tour de SCDL, a weeklong event during which you will have the opportunity to win one of several Amazon Kindle eReaders (which were generously donated by SCDL Friends of the Library groups)--just by getting to know your library a little better. It runs from April 9-13, with a big finale at Main Library on April 14 where we'll have music, crafts, downloads, snacks, and of course, the prize drawing.

There are many other excellent events planned at a branch of the Stark County District Library near you, including children's story times, book groups for adults, computer classes, programs for teens, and much more.
