One More Photo Show, a Visit from Education and Parenting Expert Diana Boggia, and What is coming soon to Stark County District Library

The kids are going back to school; it seems like there’s a touch of autumn in the air. Well, perhaps not autumn just yet, but at least the 90-degree temperatures of June and July seem like a distant memory. Fall programs are coming soon to Stark County District Library. I’ll preview a few below. You can get a look at all of the upcoming programs in the latest issue of Stark Scene, which you can pick up
at any branch, or read online by clicking this link. This week, we have one more Photo Show, where you can admire the talented work of your friends and neighbors. You can also meet author and education expert Diana Boggia, and learn her strategies for parenting with a purpose.

As always, each program listed here is linked to the Stark County District Library Events calendar, where you'll get more information about the program (such as the time the event is offered), and have the opportunity to register online or by phone to attend.

Check out the Madge Youtz Branch Photo Gallery on Wednesday, August 22 to see photos entered into the Photo Contest by your fellow Stark County friends and neighbors. The photo gallery will be open all day.

If have questions or are facing homeownership issues like loan modification, foreclosure, or bankruptcy, Homeowner Information class on Thursday, August 23 can help with suggestions for how to proceed. This class is taught by local attorneys and is sponsored by Community Legal Aid and the Stark County Bar Association. They can help you with a number of topics, including how to be considered for loan modification programs, how foreclosure works, how to obtain free legal help, and more.

Children’s Chess Club meets on Thursday, August 23 at North Branch for grades 1-6. All skill levels are welcome. Chess boards are provided, but you can also bring your own for the home board advantage. Chess Club is a great way for kids to make new friends, blow off steam, and keep their minds sharp while having fun. It meets throughout the fall on Thursdays.

She will be discussing her new book Parenting with a Purpose, as well as techniques to bring out the best in your child. Books will be available for sale at the event. Boggia will be visiting SCDL three more times in the coming weeks. Here’s a link to all of her SCDL appearances.

The library has two new online resources: Credo Reference and Law Depot. Credo Reference is, and I quote, “an easy to use tool for research products and homework. Users may search encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri, quotations, and subject specific titles." It’s an immense resource with hundreds of thousands of images and audio files, and over 3 million searchable entries. All at your fingertips.  Law Depot provides access to thousands of legal forms, so you can create legal documents that you can edit and view anywhere, any time.

Coming in September:

Have you ever wanted to start your own business? At Small Business Essentials on Thursday, September 20, Marcie Bragg from the Center for Entrepreneurial Success will present the fundamentals of small business ownership. Get additional information in November at Start and Finance Your Own Business.

And, coming on Thursday, September 27, Main Library presents Job Search Readiness. In the course of one morning, you can get the tools to ensure you are prepared for all aspects of your job search. Topics include: Job Search Resources, Finding Jobs Online, Interviewing for Success, Resume Readiness, and SARTA Travel Training.

Also beginning in September and running throughout October, the library will be hosting One Book, One Community Discussions and events. The Mayor’s Literacy Commission has selected the inspirational autobiographical book, That’s Why I’m Here, by Chris Spielman with Bruce Hooley for the One Book, One Community Discussion. The book covers Spielman’s career in football and the many challenges he and his wife Stefanie faced during her battle with breast cancer. Here is a link to all of the One Book, One Community Discussions and special events.

There are many other excellent events planned at at a branch of the Stark County District Library near you, including children's story times, book groups for adults, computer classes, programs for teens, and much more.
