Cooking and Knitting, plus a pre-Holiday Survey of eReaders, and Snakes (!) this week at Stark County District Library

Did you know the Stark County District Library is More Than Books? Your library is also a great place for child caregivers to discover fun, enriching story times for kids from the time they’re newborns to preschoolers (ages 4-5). You’ll find regular story times at a branch near you, as well as numerous special story times throughout the season, like Pajama Story Time, Family Story Time, and Winter Wonderland Story Times. So, get your child ready to read with stories, songs, and fun at Stark County District Library. Here is a link to the events calendar, and all of the regular weekly and special story times currently offered.

Stark County District Library also presents numerous informative, inspiring, and entertaining programs for all ages.  This week’s schedule includes a visit from former Akron Beacon Journal food editor Jane Snow, numerous knitting groups for both children and adults, an informative hands-on survey of eReaders and mobile reading devices, a visit from the staff of the Wilderness Center with some friendly snakes, and much more.

Jane Snow visits Lake Community Branch on Tuesday, November 13 to talk about her book, Jane Snow Cooks, and to share quick ways to prepare delicious meals in a crockpot. She’ll have books available for you to purchase as well.

Teens can get a post-Halloween sugar treat while getting creative—and literary—with sweets all week long at Edible Books at Jackson Township Branch. Make your own edible masterpiece from fruit roll-ups and other goodies.

On Thursday, November 15 at DeHoff Memorial Branch teens can check out informative cooking demos, and kickstart their wardrobes with clothing enhancement tips at Demonstration Station.

The Wilderness Center visits Jackson Township Branch on Thursday, November 15 to present For Goodness Snakes. Find out about Ohio’s native snakes and how they are valuable members of the natural community.

Stark County District Library locations will host numerous knitting groups this week. For children, Knorth Knitters meets at North Branch on Thursday, November 15. Grades K-5 can learn how to knit, or develop their knitting skills with friends. Jackson Township Branch offers Kids Crochet on Monday, November 19 for Grades 3-6. Learn to crochet basic stitches to make projects for yourself or gifts for someone special.

For adults, Knitty Gritters Knitting Club meets at Lake Community Branch on Monday, November 19. Also on Monday the 19th, the In the Loop Knitters meet at DeHoff Memorial Branch, and the Close Knit group meets at Jackson Township Branch. Join one of our knitting groups to share your skills, learn about new techniques and projects, and enjoy some social time with other knitters.

Plain Community Branch’s Cookbook Club meets on Monday, November 19. Registered Dietician Bonnie Boyd will lead the group talking about cooking, and featuring a different cookbook each month. Bring along a healthful dish and the recipe to share with others.

Are you considering purchasing an eReader like a Kindle or an iPad, or one of the myriad other electronic devices that you can use to read eBooks, but don’t know where to start to learn about them? Or maybe you just want a little time to interact with one to see which is right for you? The Holiday eReader and Mobile Device Sampler is for you. Offered by the library’s Technology Training Department, the program will be offered three times over the course of the next 30 days. The first Sampler will be offered on Monday, November 19 at Jackson Township Branch. Join us and sample some of the most popular eReaders such as the Amazon Kindle line, the Nook products, iPads, and other types of devices like the Andriod Tablet, Acer Iconia, and others. You’ll get hands-on learning using the devices and we’ll walk you through the Ohio eBook Project for downloading free library digital materials.

Chef Candace Brown returns to DeHoff Memorial Branch to present Sparks Before Fire: Cooking Without Fire on Tuesday, November 20. She’ll demonstrate how to prepare delicious, healthy meals in a hands-on cooking program.
