Celebrate National Library Week with Activities for All Ages at Stark County District Library

Community Health Fair, National Bookmobile Day, and a National Library Week celebration with Activities for All Ages at Stark County District Library

Did you know the Stark County District Library is More Than Books? We’re celebrating National Library Week with baseball-themed fun. The library will have make it-take it crafts for children and teens each day, and Celebrity Story Times for families featuring local Stark County celebrities. And, by learning more about some of the great services and resources offered every day at Stark County District Library, you can enter a drawing to win one of four great prize baskets at the National Library Week Finale at Main Library on Saturday, April 20. So, stop in this week and find out about the some of the library’s resources--including children’s audiobooks, Genealogy Services, Senior Surfer Computer classes, the library’s online databases, Caldecott and Newbery award winning books, and more.

As always, each program listed below is linked to the Stark County District Library Events calendar, where you'll get more information about the program (such as the time the event is offered), and have the opportunity to register online or by phone to attend.

Celebrity Story Times are scheduled all week long at various Stark County District Library locations. Families can enjoy a special story time featuring favorite stories led by a local celebrity. Here is a link to all the upcoming Celebrity Story Times so you can find one near you, and find out which local celebrity will be participating.

On Tuesday, April 16, teens can explore poetry with a cool craft that allows them to upcycle a deck of cards into a visual poetry craft at 52 Things About Me at Plain Community Branch. There’s more poetry for teens at Lake Community Branch on Wednesday, April 17. In celebration of National Haiku Day, stop by for Haiku U, and try your hand at writing an example of this popular short poetry form, then enter your creation in our Poetry Contest.

Wednesday, April 17 is also National Bookmobile Day! The Stark County District Library Bookmobile will be at the Waynesburg Shopping Centre from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, so check out our amazing travelling collection of library materials, meet our wonderful Mobile Services staff, and share a piece of cake and some fun with us.

Thursday, April 18 is the Community Health Fair at Main Library. All ages are invited. There will be health screenings and the opportunity to talk to health professionals, and the Wild About Eyes interactive kiosk will also be in the building for children to learn about eye health and safety in a fun way. Sponsored by Mercy Medical Center, Prevent Blindness Ohio, and SCDL.

Is Your House Overweight? Popular local author Sharon Kreighbaum visits Perry Sippo Branch on Thursday, April 18 to share tips on the best ways to de-clutter, organize, design, and clean your house. She’ll have copies of her book for purchase and signing.

Kids grades K-5 can celebrate Earth Day at DeHoff Memorial Branch on Saturday, April 20. We’ll learn about Earth Day and create a fun, green craft. Kids at Plain Community Branch can Celebrate Elephant and Piggie Day with games, stories, and crafts featuring some of the beloved characters of author/illustrator Mo Willems. Just Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus on the trip to the library.

Gardening season is just around the corner. Learn all about Plant Diseases and Good Bugs and Bad Bugs at Main Library on Saturday, April 20 as part of our Gardening Series. Dr. Voltz of the Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster and Denise Ellsworth of OSU Extension Services will present this lively and informative program.

Monday, April 22 is Poetry Night at Jackson Township Branch. Published poet, essayist, and Associate Professor of English at Stark State College Marie Cox will lead an evening featuring an open mic poetry reading and constructive feedback.

Also on Monday, April 22, teens can explore their creative side at a special Art Class with Perry High School Art teacher Susan Rusu.

Occupational therapist Andi Michelson presents Aging in Place on Monday, April 22 at North Branch. Learn how the elderly can continue to live safely and comfortably at home with adaptive equipment for bathing, dressing, and dining.
