Celebrate Family History Month with Genealogy Programs, plus Quilting, Cooking, and More this week at Stark County District Library

Genealogy Programs in celebration of Family History Month, Cooking, Quilting, and Book Sales at Stark County District Library

Did you know the Stark County District Library is More Than Books? Your library is also a great place to start learning a new language online with Mango, a free language learning system that you can access any time with your computer and your library card. Get practical conversational skills in any of dozens of languages including Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Italian, Greek and more. The library also presents an array of inspring and enriching programs for all ages and interests. This week, we present genealogy programs to celebrate Family History Month, as well as Cooking Without Fire for kids and caregivers, book sales, One Book, One Community Book Discussions, and much more.

As always, each program listed here is linked to the Stark County District Library Events calendar, where you'll get more information about the program (such as the time the event is offered), and have the opportunity to register online or by phone to attend.

The first in a series of three programs focusing on Fracking, Oil, and Gas Exploration in Stark County will be offered at Lake Community Branch on Tuesday, October 2. A Layman’s Guide to Oil and Gas Exploration will be presented by Michael Gruber of the Stark County Association of Realtors. Gruber will discuss drilling rights, leasing and surface rights, and all about buying and selling land.

The second Fracking, Oil, and Gas Exploration-related program will be offered at Lake Community Branch a week later, on Tuesday, October 9. Oil and Gas Exploration and the Environment will be presented by Trent Dougherty, Director of Legal Affairs for the Ohio Environmental Council’s Agriculture & Clean Water; Clean Air & Energy and Legislative Affairs policy programs. He will present information about the environmental aspects of this controversial issue.

East Canton Branch is hosting a week-long book sale from Monday, October 1, through Saturday, October 6. Stop in and pick up great bargains in children’s books, best-sellers, thrillers, non-fiction, classics, and more. Bring a bag and fill it for $1.00 on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, October 6, you can check out the monthly Friends of the Library Book Sale at Main Library. The book sale is held across the parking lot in the Garage and inside Main Library and features great bargain books of all kinds.

Would you like to learn how to make beautiful quilts for your family? Learn the fine art of Quilting on Wednesday, October 3 at DeHoff Memorial Branch. Quilting expert Chris Phillips will show you the fundamentals at Basic Quilting Class.

There are three One Book, One Community Book Discussions planned for this week. Join us on Thursday, October 4 at Jackson Township Branch, or Perry Sippo Branch, or on Tuesday, October 9 at East Canton Branch. We’ll talk about Chris Spielman’s inspirational book That’s Why I’m Here which traces his football career and how he and his wife Stefanie faced many challenges during her battle with breast cancer. There are a number of special events planned around the One Book program, so here is a link to a complete list.

As part of the events celebrating the One Book, One Community Book Discussions of Chris Spielman’s book, That’s Why I’m Here, Main Library will present Tackling Breast Cancer… More Than Pink Ribbons on Tuesday, October 9. Experts will visit to share the latest information on breast cancer awareness, prevention, and treatment.

Kids grades K-5 can celebrate National Pasta Month at North Branch on Thursday, October 5 by making pasta jewelry and art at Mama Mia… Pasta Day for Me. The kids will get to design and create, while discovering all the fun varieties of pasta.

Jackson Township Branch will host a great program called Cooking Without Fire: Kids and Caregivers Cooking Together on Saturday, Oct 6. In a hands-on cooking experience presented by chef Candace Brown, kids grades K-5 and caregivers will learn to prepare healthy, delicious food together that everyone will love. It will be a wonderful way to spend quality time with your children while you learn together.

Celebrate Family History Month this week at Lake Community Branch on Saturday, October 6, and Jackson Township Branch on Monday, October 8. At Lake Community Branch you can learn how to research your family tree in the digital age with Genealogy and the Internet during Session 1 from 1:00-2:30 pm, and Genealogy Computer Programs during Session II from 3:00-4:30 pm. Jackson Township Branch will present Using Ancestry.com & Family Search Effectively on Monday, October 8. Both branches are hosting month-long celebrations of Family History Month with numerous excellent and illuminating genealogy programs, here is a link to all of them.

On Monday, October 8 at North Branch, don’t miss a special screening of the short documentary Every War Has Two Losers about poet and National Book Award winner William Stafford’s life and his decision to become a conscientious objector during World War II. The film draws from journals he kept at the time and features commentary by Robert Bly, Maxine Hong Kingston, W.S. Merwin, Alice Walker, and others. The film is presented as a part of Malone University’s Inaugural William Stafford Lecture, which is scheduled for Tuesday, October 9, and will be presented by author and American Academy of Arts & Sciences member Scott Russell Sanders.
