Food for Fines - A Win-Win for the Community

Food for Fines at the North Canton Public Library begins June 4th!

The North Canton Public Library will host a "Food for Fines" campaign beginning June 4, 2012 and ending June 16, 2012. During the campaign, library patrons can donate non-perishable food items in lieu of paying their library fines.

Here's how it works:

  • The fine for one overdue item will be waived for each item donated, with a maximum of $25 in total credit possible for each account.
  • Any fines that are in the official collections process cannot be waived, but all other fines are eligible for the program.
  • Acceptable donations include non-expired canned goods or boxed food items, as well as unopened paper products and toiletries.

The library’s primary partner in this initiative is the Zion Lutheran Church Food Pantry, which is known as the North Canton satellite location of the Stark County Hunger Task Force. Zion will distribute the collected food to families in need through their existing program.

“This program has been incredibly successful in the past, and we’re excited to offer it again this year,” said Sandi Lang, Library Director. Lang explained that it’s a program in which everyone wins including the library. “We are proud of the service we provide to the community, and we do not want outstanding fines to prevent our patrons from utilizing the library’s resources,” she said.  As the library prepares for the launch of its popular summer reading programs, it is important that fines not prevent patrons, especially young children and teens, from participating.

Patrons who do not have existing fines, but wish to donate food items, are certainly encouraged to do so.
