Queen George's Cupcakes Taste Sweet Success

Jordan Goos, owner of Queen George's Cupcakes, went from a working mother to an entrepreneur and working mother. Read on to find out how she turned her hobby into a business she loves

Do you remember when you were 6 years old and you knew exactly what you wanted to be when you grew up? There was a sense of magic and excitement — something so refreshing about growing up and doing what you love most.

For Jordan Goos of North Canton, her childhood dream finally blossomed to life.

Goos has always loved making and decorating cakes. She decorated cakes at  Cold Stone Creamery while she was in college and has always made cupcakes for the holidays, family events and parties. It was one party in particular that pushed her to start selling her cakes and cupcakes.

"I did a cocktail reception at the Barrel Room in December for a friend of mine that lived out of state and from there it has kind of snowballed," Goos said. "Several people inquired about my product after this event, so I made business cards and officially started Queen George's Cupcakes."

The name was created from childhood nicknames. Her sister was nicknamed "Queenie" because she always got what she wanted and Goos was nicknamed "George," her sister's shortened version of Jordan.

Goos calls her sister her not-so-silent "silent" partner. Her sister, who does a lot of word-of-mouth marketing for the business, gives Goos honest advice and feedback.

"She'll tell me how it is and it's a good dynamic," Goos said.

Juggling motherhood and her day job as a home-care-nurse can be challenging, but Goos still gets excited when she works on her special creations for customers.  She doesn't view it as work because it's what she truly loves to do.

"It's my happy place," she said.

It's also nice to have the support of her husband, who does the job no baker likes to do: clean up the mess. She is able to focus on making extravagant cakes and mouthwatering cupcakes.

Goos  is a perfectionist and she'll spend hours working on intricate designs, refusing to present a product that doesn't look or taste perfect.

"Like all food businesses, I think my cupcakes taste great, but that's not all there is to them," she said. "They look fabulous and we all know you eat with your eyes before you actually eat with your mouth."

"I focus on custom, clean, beautiful decorations in addition to a great-tasting cupcake," Goos said.

Goos dreams of one day owning a storefront for Queen George's Cupcakes, but for now for she is excited about her new website, www.queengeorgescupcakes.com. Those interested in ordering cupcakes may also do so on her Facebook page, and they now can pay through PayPal.

She will take a trip to Chicago to visit her photographer friend who will help make her website come to life. She loves her friend's work — and also the fact she can pay in cupcakes.

You can be certain this will be one happy photographer.
