Bites Nearby: Mama Guzzardi's Italian Restaurant

Mama Guzzardi's has been a local destination for authentic Italian cooking since 1986

North Canton Patch once again picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

Overview: Mama Guzzardi's is known for generous portions and offering substitutions whenever possible. The menu is strictly Italian. Mama Guzzardi was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, and turned her hobby of cooking for family into a restaurant venture nearly 25 years ago. You can dine in or carry out.

Decor: It has a casual and comfortable feel to it right down to the red-and-white checked table cloths. The waitresses are pleasant and greet you with a smile regardless of how busy they are. Guzzardi family pictures adorn all the walls of the little two-room restaurant.

The Drinks: No alcoholic beverages are served but all Pepsi products are available as well as iced tea, lemonade, milk and coffee.

Appetizers: In lieu of appetizers, limited extras are available and all are under $3. You can get a meatball, sausage link, applesauce, cheese or mushrooms.

Entrees: All pasta dishes are under $10 and come with soup or salad and garlic bread. You will be tempted to fill up on the delicious garlic bread before your main course arrives. The house dressing (Italian) is recommended.

Several sub sandwiches are available and all under $8. The chip steak deluxe contains fresh thinly sliced ribeye steak, homemade meat sauce, sauteed peppers, onions and mushrooms. Plus it's topped with cheese — definitely a customer favorite.

Children's portions, 10-inch individual pizzas ($6.95) and daily dinner specials complete the entree portion of the menu.

Desserts: What else would you complete an authentic Italian meal with than spumoni ice cream, cannoli and cheesecake ($3 each).

Service: Reservations are recommended for parties of more than eight and major credit cards are accepted. Parking is limited but you can squeeze in along the side of the building if you have to.

Hours: Monday and Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sunday from noon-7 p.m. and closed on Tuesday.
