North Canton's Song Birds Make Music for a Cause

Local chorus group performs to raise funds for charity

North Canton residents who like to sing and help others can join A Chorus for a Cause to make a difference through song. Each concert donates money to an individual cause.

“Every concert we do will be for raising funds for a particular cause,” said Christine Allison, artistic director and founder of A Chorus for a Cause. “We’ve done the American Heart Association, Juvenile Diabetes and the Domestic Violence Project.”

In 2009, Allison’s nine-year dream began with the singing of a piece called Sing for a Cure. The published piece was a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. Performed with a full volunteer orchestra, Allison and all her volunteers raised more than $12,000 for the foundation.

After the 2009 event, Allison was asked to continue the chorus by those who participated. She then felt she was being led to name the organization A Chorus for a Cause.

Less than one year after their first performance, A Chorus for a Cause was asked to sing at Carnegie Hall in New York City to perform at the 10th Anniversary concert of Sing for a Cure.

Keri Reinhardt, a member who started last fall, said she enjoyed singing for her church choir and wanted to get more involved with the community, so the chorus was a perfect fit.

“The whole purpose of singing, in my mind, is that it just feels good,” Reinhardt said. “It’s a way to give back in so many ways.”

Their next event will be Oct. 1 and will support the local Special Olympics. This event will have light pieces. One of the fun pieces is called The Tortoise and the Hare. So far, she has 87 singers who plan to participate.

“It’s a delightful group,” Allison said. “I continue to hear wonderful stories out of the chorus.”

In May 2012, A Chorus for a Cause will sing in Atlanta to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

“We touch so many people,” Reinhardt said. “Some of the songs we sang in the past have meant so much to so many people.”

The chorus practices at the North Canton Playhouse Youth Theater. They take new singers twice a year because they have two major concerts a year. After each major concert, they open up the chorus for those to join them. There are no auditions, and the group welcomes anyone with an interest.

They also like to have people help pass out programs or take tickets at the concerts. For those who would like to get involved, contact A Chorus for a Cause at www.achorusforacause.org.
