Whiz Kid: Payton Orosa Qualfies for State Level National Geographic Bee

Read on to see how North Canton Middle School student Payton Orosa earned a spot to compete in the state-level National Geographic Bee. His love of geography may lead him to Washington, D.C.

This week's Whiz Kid comes to us from Lindsay Billker, social studies and enriched English teacher at .

  • Payton qualified for the state-level National Geographic Geography Bee. He earned this honor by participating in the schoolwide Bee, which included grades 6 through 8. Payton took a qualifying test, which was submitted to the National Geographic Society.

The students with the top 100 scores were invited to participate at the state level. The state Bee is April 1 at Ohio State University, Mansfield Campus. One winner from each state will advance to the national competition, which is May 24 and 25 at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. The final round of the 2011 National Geography Bee will air on the National Geographic Channel May 25.

"North Canton Middle School is truly proud of Payton for this awesome accomplishment, " Lindsay Billker said. "Being one of only 100 students from our state chosen to compete at the state-level Bee is quite an achievement."
