Whiz Kid: Owen Frank Reads and Transposes Music

At the age of 6, Owen Frank is reading and transposing music. His love for books has been a huge part of his musical talent. Next Beethoven? You never know

This week's Whiz Kid comes to us from Jessie Frank, mother of  Owen Frank.

  • Owen Frank, 6
  • Attends
  • Owen has loved books since he was born. When he learned to crawl, he headed straight to the bookshelf. He would sit and look at books, one page at a time, until he was buried under a mountain of books. He started reading when he was 3 years old. He's been reading chapter books since the age of 4.

Owen has combined his love for reading with music and can even read music, which he's been doing for some time. He's also transposing music — a challenging feat for any musician.

"His piano teacher says he reads music like a language," Jessie Frank said. "It's unlikely for a child his age to be able to that."

"He has also begun transposing songs. For instance, last week, he took a song written in G and played it in C. For the non-musical readers, I have been playing flute for 23 years and I can't transpose!"
