Patch Picks: Great One-Tank 'Staycations' for Spring Break

Looking to get out of North Canton but not stray too far? Check out our picks for awesome "staycations"

1. Dundee Falls in Dundee (Tuscarawas County) is part of the 2,000-acre Beach City Wildlife Area. Two large natural waterfalls and several smaller ones bring in people from all over. The falls are connected by trails for hiking. Those looking for more adventure can rock climb or ride mountain bikes in the area. Hobo's Cave is nearby and appropriate for beginning "cavers" because of its short depth. For more information, call 330-644-2293.

2. The J.M. Smucker Company has been around since 1897 and is known for its jelly. You can discover what the company has evolved into over the past 100 years by visiting the J.M. Smucker Company Store and Cafe to our west in Wayne County's Orrville. Open Monday through Saturday at 9 a.m., you can visit their shop, cafe and museum. For more information, call 330-684-1500.

3. A trip to Plain City near Columbus will land you at the Phoenix Bat Company. Owner Charley "Lefty" Trudeau turned a hobby into a full-time business 10 years ago. Phoenix Bat is a specialized wooden-bat creator and manufacturer for both baseball and softball using both rock maple and ash. Trudeau's clients range from youth to major-league ballplayers. One-hour tours of his operation are available for $10 per person on weekdays. Call 614-873-7776 to make reservations.

4. Cadiz (Harrison County) is said to be the "Proudest Small Town In America." Cadiz is the proud birthplace of famous actor Clark Gable and has a museum and gift shop in his honor along with bed and breakfast lodging. The area's agricultural roots are also recognized in this county seat. For more information, call 740-942-4989.

5. Just a few miles to the south along I-77 in Canton is the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It is the shrine to the men who made pro football America's most popular sport. Established in 1963, the Hall of Fame can keep you occupied for hours reviewing exhibits and participating in numerous interactive activities. It's open daily from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and prices range from $21 for adults to free admission for kids under 5. Senior discounts are available, too. For more information, call 330-456-8207.
