North Canton's 'CHARACTER COUNTS!' Builds Character Throughout the Community

The Six Pillars of Character lay the foundation for local group dedicated to improving society

All kinds of community members can get involved with CHARACTER COUNTS! by promoting the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. CHARACTER COUNTS! in North Canton takes pride in a diverse group of people coming together for a common cause.

“It’s a unique organization because it blends so many attributes from the community,” said Dennis Coy, director of the North Canton CHARACTER COUNTS!. “Everyone in the community has a voice.”

Coy is one of many people involved in various organizations around the area. The organization includes everyone from high school students to church affiliates.

He said there’s character education in all aspects of the community.

“The organization is starting to scratch the surface of community awareness,” Coy said.

The group also welcomes discussions on its Facebook page. Recently, it's asked people about bullying, how the pillars of character are displayed in sports fans and how they've displayed the six pillars of character in their day that day.

The Six Pillars of Character demonstrate how people should be treated. The North Canton CHARACTER COUNTS! is one of the few groups going into various community outlets.

The group will support its first event on business ethics April 8. It kicks off with a 7:30 a.m.-8:45 a.m. breakfast titled, “How You Do What You Do: The Real Bottom Line." Following is a 9 a.m.-11 a.m. seminar titled, “The Challenges of Ethical Business Practices."

Featured speaker Dr. Michael Dunphy, professor of biochemistry, will speak in the Barrette Business and Community Center at .

“This is just the beginning of many great things in North Canton,” said Donna Nickel, consultant with the North Canton CHARACTER COUNTS!. “With our group, you can get input from a lot of different levels. It hits all the different sectors of the community.”
