Grab & Go Kids Planner: Participate in a Fishing Derby and Wildlife Baby Shower

Parties for Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Day also top our list of local events to attend with your children

Looking for something fun to do with the kids this week? Each Wednesday, our Grab & Go calendar focuses on five family-friendly activities and events taking place in and around North Canton.

Pick and choose from this week’s array of highlighted happenings: a children’s fishing tournament, Cinco de Mayo celebration, a baby shower for newborn wildlife, a pajama party for mothers and daughters and a family night at a local restaurant.

FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK

1. Jack Cullen Memorial Towpath Trail Trout Derby

When/Where:  8-11 a.m. Saturday at Lock 4 Trailhead, just south of Canal Fulton on Erie Street

Why Go: Children ages 4 to 15 can participate in Stark County’s largest fishing derby sponsored by the Stark County Park District, Stark County Federation of Conservation Clubs and the Berkley Fishing Team. Young fishing enthusiasts will be eligible to win trophies, fishing gear and door prizes. A special trophy will be awarded to the child who reels in the longest fish. Participants will receive a bag of tackle from . Each child should bring his or her own fishing pole. Register for the derby in person at the event.

2. Cinco De Mayo Celebration            

When/Where: 3 p.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Lake Community Library Branch, 11955 Market Ave. N, Uniontown

Why Go: Children in kindergarten through fifth grade will get to enjoy stories, musical activities and even make their own salsa with ingredients donated by . The activity is in honor of the holiday that celebrates the Mexican Army's 1862 victory over the French Army at the Battle of Puebla.

3. Stark Parks’ Wildlife Baby Shower

When/Where: 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park, 5712 12th St. NW, Canton

Why Go: The fourth annual event will benefit hundreds of wildlife babies recovering at the rehabilitation center of the park district. Guests will get up close and personal with owls, squirrels and other creatures and learn about the work done in the center that cares for more than 2,000 injured and orphaned wild animals each year. Those who attend are asked to bring a gift for the wildlife babies. Stark Parks suggests guests bring baby blankets, towels, animal cages, pet taxis, paper towels, heating pads, bird seed or pet store gift cards as presents. Click here to view Stark Park’s complete gift “wish list.” The shower will include baby animal games, door prizes, raffle baskets and refreshments for the whole family.

Pricing: The event is open to the public free of charge. Reservations are being accepted at 330-409-8096 or online and should be made as soon as possible.

4. Mother and Daughter Pajama Party

When/Where: 6 p.m.-7 p.m. Monday at the Plain Community Library Branch, 1803 Schneider St. NE, Canton

Why Go: The activity specifically is for teens and adults and is a way to celebrate Mother’s Day together. Daughters and their moms should come in their pajamas and be prepared for an evening of fun.

Pricing: The party is free but registration is requested, as space is limited. To register call 330-477-8482 or do so online.

5. Kids and Family Night

When/Where: 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at at Belden Village

Why Go: For each adult meal purchased, a child will receive a free kid's meal. Entertainment will be provided, and the play area will be open.
